HMRC mileage rates 2026/27
Cars and vans: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year (up from 45p from 5 June 2026), then 25p. Motorcycles: 24p. Bicycles: 20p. Commuting to your usual workplace doesn't count as business travel.
If your employer pays less than these rates, you may be able to claim tax relief on the difference.
Check rates on GOV.UKMileage Calculator FAQs: who is it for?
I'm an employee who drives to client sites. How does this help?
Enter your business miles and see exactly what you can claim at HMRC rates. If your employer pays less than 55p a mile, the difference is what you can claim tax relief on - money many people never ask for.
I'm self-employed and use my own car for work. Why use this?
Simplified mileage lets you claim 55p a mile for the first 10,000 miles instead of adding up fuel, insurance and repairs. Add up your miles each month and download a PDF as a record for your tax return.
I've already claimed some miles this year. Does it handle the 10,000 mile switch?
Yes. Enter the car miles already claimed this tax year and it splits the rest between 55p and 25p automatically, so you never overclaim.
I cycle to visit customers. Can I claim for that?
Yes - 20p a mile for business journeys by bicycle and 24p by motorcycle. Add them in the same calculation for one total.
