How the hourly rate is worked out
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (weekly hours × paid weeks a year). For example, £30,000 at 37.5 hours over 52 weeks is £15.38 an hour. Salaried staff usually get paid holiday, so 52 weeks is normal.
Freelancers may want to use fewer weeks (say 46) to allow for unpaid holiday and quiet spells. All figures are gross, before tax and deductions. From April 2026 the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour for those aged 21 and over.
Hourly Rate Calculator FAQs: who is it for?
I've been offered a salaried job. What's that per hour?
Enter the salary and weekly hours to see your real hourly rate. It's the easiest way to compare a salaried job with an hourly one, or check you're above the minimum wage.
I'm a freelancer. What hourly rate do I need for my target income?
Switch to hourly to salary and try rates until you hit your target. Set paid weeks to around 46 to allow for holidays and quiet spells you won't be paid for.
I'm thinking of doing longer hours for a pay rise. Is it worth it?
Put in both offers and compare the hourly rate. A higher salary for many more hours can actually be a pay cut per hour.
